My vase trail took me back to the Len Salmon Stadium, home of Bowers & Pitsea for their match against Thurlow Nunn Premier Side Haverhill Rovers and it was the home side who started the brighter although there were no clear cut chances in the first ten minutes.
On 7 minutes Bowers delivered a couple of teasing crosses into the box which had the away sides defence concerned but nothing came of them and then on 9 minutes Jamie Salmon’s free kick drifted wide of the target for the home side. Rovers ventured forward and Cornwell controlled a pass and swiveled and volleyed towards goal but keeper Scott Hinton was equal to it.
Then on 12 minutes Bowers grabbed the lead when a ball was laid back to Ross Adams and from the edge of the box he drilled a low shot past Coombe.
Bowers had their tails up and were dominating their opponents and on 21 minutes a great crossfield pass found Durrant on the right hand side and he cut in and unleashed an effort at goal but it was weak and didn’t trouble Coombe.
Most of any attacking play Haverhill were having was going through Cornwell and on 26 minutes he elected to shoot from way out when driving forward but the effort flew way way over. Just before the half hour Haverhill won a free kick on the edge of the box and Shinn took it and it only just went over the bar.
Rovers were coming back into the game now although chances were now few and far between as the half beckoned but on 41 minutes a blow for Bowers when captain Scott Pethers went down and was eventually stretchered off with an ankle problem. However Bowers ended the half on a high when they won a free kick out on the left and dead ball specialist Jamie Salmon whipped in a great ball which found the unmarked Lewis Manor in the six yard box who diverted the ball past the helpless Coombe and in for a 2-0 half time lead.
To be fair to the visitors they came out second half the better side and six minutes into the half Healey cut inside but hit his effort wide of Hinton’s goal. Haverhill’s problem was their end product, they were ok up until the final third and then just couldn’t find the killer touch. On 61 minutes another free kick from Shinn deflected towards goal but Scott Hinton was down to save in the Bowers goal. A minute later and Healey again had a sight of goal but his toe poke towards goal was saved by Scott Hinton.
Bowers finally tested Coombe in the Haverhill goal for the first time in the half when on 63 minutes a glancing header from Lewis Manor was tipped wide by Coombe. This was the only real chance the home side would create until the final few minutes as they spent a lot of the time defending crosses from the away side, and doing a good job at defending them it has to be said. Haverhill were putting a lot of effort into the game knowing a goal back would change the game completely. With ten minutes to go Bowers did manage to break up the other end but Durrant’s effort flew way over the bar.
With five minutes to go Cornwell tried a spectacular over head kick but it lacked any real power and bounced into the arms of Scott Hinton. A minute later and the home side killed off the tie once and for all when a brilliant counter attack found substitute Tom Hine one on one with Coombe and he took it round the keeper and then decided to cut back onto his right foot before eventually slamming the ball into the net. Game over for sure.
Rovers did attack again on 89 minutes but Cornwell’s effort at goal was palmed away by Scott Hinton, who no doubt wanted that clean sheet. A tiring Haverhill side were caught on the hop again when Bowers broke down the left hand side through Durrant and his excellent ball into the area found an unmarked substitute in the shape of Stuart Fergus who fired the ball beyond Coombe and put some more gloss on the scoreline. So its Bowers who progress to the 1st Round Proper on November 1st and they have been drawn away to Wembley FC.

Wednesday 8th October
Maltby Main 3 Dronfield Town 1 (match abandoned after 87 minutes, please see below)
The FA Vase Second Qualifying Round Replay between Maltby Main and Dronfield Town on Wednesday evening was abandoned by the referee after disgraceful scenes in the final minutes.
With Maltby leading 3-1 in a bad-tempered clash the game erupted on 87 minutes after a foul.
Punches were thrown by at least five or six players and Dronfield player William Earl was kicked on the leg, which resulted in a suspected broken leg.
An ambulance took Earl to hospital.
Referee Mr Bannister from Featherstone sent off Carlton Dickson from Dronfield Town and Bob Branagan from Maltby, who it was alleged had aimed the deliberate kick at Earl.
However, with players, managers, club officials and a spectator on the field the referee abandoned the match.
Dronfield led 1-0 at half time but in the second half Maltby pulled back to lead 3-1.
As of yet I don’t know if this result will stand or not but I’m sure we will find out in due course what repercussions will come from these dreadful scenes.
