Season 2017-18 - Third Round Proper

Saturday 2nd December

Hullbridge Sports 3 Enfield 1893 2

Two Jimmy Cox penalties helped see Hullbridge Sports win a frenetic all Essex Senior League FA Vase contest at Lower Road against Enfield 1893 to make the Last 32 of the competition.

The hosts came close to opening the scoring in the fifth minute when after Cox had kept the ball in down the left, his cross into the dangerzone found the head of Michael Salako but keeper Michael Corderoy pulled off a brilliant save to deny the hosts an early advantage.

However midway through the half the hosts were awarded a penalty when a Joe Pattison effort struck the hand of a defender and saw a penalty given although the visitors felt hard done by as it was struck at him from a short distance.  Anyway Cox put the spot kick away and the hosts had the advantage.

On the half hour mark John Bricknell sent a free kick just over for the visitors as they looked to respond to going behind, and as the half wore down towards it’s conclusion Enfield were applying some pressure however the hosts were just about keeping them at bay and went into the break a goal up.

Half Time Hullbridge Sports 1 Enfield 1893 0

If the visitors were unhappy after the first half penalty, they were even more unhappy four minutes after the break when a cross struck a defenders arm inside the box, however the referee gave a free kick, much to the hosts disbelief, however after he discussed with his assistant he changed his mind and gave the penalty, and saw the visitors go mad.

Anyway after two or three minutes of sorting everything out Cox duly stepped up to convert his second penalty of the afternoon and see the hosts grab a two goal advantage.  Enfield though were furious.

And moments after they were incandescent with rage after they felt they should of had a penalty for a foul inside the box but it was not given, and Enfield went absolutely mental, as they felt they weren’t getting the decisions in this one.

Just past the hour mark and with Enfield trying to find a way back into the game, Ben Bradbury saw an effort go straight at Harley, who was then subbed after a calf muscle injury, meaning substitute keeper Jamie Merrells took over in goal.

Enfield then saw a deep ball towards the far post knocked wide, but then with just under twenty minutes to go Enfield were awarded a spot kick of their own, and Bricknell stepped up to fire home and it was game on.

And minutes later Hullbridge keeper Merralls was shown a straight red for kicking out at visitors substitute Josh Sykes, who was also booked for his part in proceedings, however the tie had become rather tasty.  It also meant Cox, who had netted both Hullbridge goals, became the third person to don the gloves for the hosts in this tie, and Hullbridge had to play the rest of the game a man light.

But with eight minutes remaining it was the hosts who increased their lead when Harry Watkins thumped a wonderful free kick beyond Corderoy from twenty yards and the hosts celebrated as if they had sealed it.

However moments later Enfield pulled one to make things interesting once again when a mad scramble inside the box eventually saw Luke Thomas bury the loose ball from close range, it had been some second half.

Enfield piled on the pressure late on and with six minutes of stoppage time to come it was certainly not over, but the hosts managed to keep the visitors at bay and hold on to progress into the Last 32 of the FA Vase. Phew what a tie!

Here are some photos of the day:-

So it’s Hullbridge Sports who progress into the Last 32 of the Vase, and they will travel to take on Spartan South Midlands Premier side Tring Athletic in Hertfordshire.  The Herts side knocked out Berkhamsted in the last round, with Berkhamsted being the only unbeaten side in league football across the fourteen step five divisions in the UK, so this will be a tough assignment for the Essex Senior League side.  However I believe it’s an assignment they can pass so should be a decent cup tie.

Season 2017-18 - Second Round Proper

Saturday 11th November
Tower Hamlets 1 Enfield 1893 2
Joe Clark struck with just over twenty minutes to go to send Enfield through to the Last 64 of the FA Vase in a game that ended with five red cards.

With this being Rememberence Day the afternoon begun with a minutes silence being wonderfully observered by everyone involved in remembrance of the people who admirably gave up their lives for the freedoms we have today before the teams got down to action in this all Essex Senior League tie.

And in the 15th minute the hosts took the lead through Curtis Pond and gave the hosts something to build on possibly however just a minute or so later the visitors equalised when a Staunton ball in behind found Andy Tirivanhu who escaped the offside trap and fired in for the equaliser, and we were back to square one.

And midway through the half the visitors had a golden chance to take the lead when the hosts were ajudged to have committed a foul inside the box, meaning a penalty to Enfield. However keeper Pellin managed to guess the right way and save Bricknell’s low penalty.

Just before the half hour Hamlets should have gone in front as a long throw was flicked on but went agonisingly wide and then six minutes before the break Hamlets broke from a corner but Caxton was there with a superb sliding tackle to deny the shot and prevent the hosts from possibly regaining the lead.

And four minutes before half time Enfield keeper Corderoy made a routine save to deny Hamlets the lead as the hosts had dominated the final few minutes of the half.  But the teams did go in all square at the break and it was all to play for in the second period.

Half Time Tower Hamlets 1 Enfield 1893 1

The visitors came close to taking the lead eleven minutes into the second period when Luke Thomas tried to stretch as far as he could to convert, however he just couldn’t stretch far enough to force the ball in, but in the 72nd minute Enfield did go in front when Bradbury whipped in a corner, causing a melee inside the box, and saw a Tirivanhu shot blocked on the line before Clark smashed home the loose ball.

Hamlets tried to respond in the 74th minute when after Corderoy punched at a cross, the ball fell to the hosts, but Clark was there to block it out for corner and maintain his sides lead.

Things then became harder for the hosts in the 76th minute when they were reduced to ten men after Tola Odedoyin was given his second yellow card after bringing down Sykes as the forward managed to escape him, and then three minutes later Hamlets saw red again when striker Luke With was sent off for a second bookable offence.

However that wasn't the end of the drama and the game descended into a farce deep into stoppage time when a melee by the corner flag led to two more red cards for Tower Hamlets, one for a headbutt from substitute Antonio Montiero, and also one for keeper Pellin for kicking Enfield forward Sykes, who then retalliatied and was also shown a red card as the game ended on a sour note.

The bottom line after all of that though was the fact that Enfield made it through to the Last 64 of the Vase and set up another all ESL showdown against Hullbridge Sports at Lower Road in South Essex.  Promises to be another tough and tight encounter although hopefully no red cards this time.

Season 2017-18 - First Round Proper

Saturday 21st October
Halstead Town 2 Tower Hamlets 2 (aet; Tower Hamlets won 6-5 on penalties)
The opening salvos were even as the visitors showed first and forced a couple of corners but the Humbugs returned the favour with one of the visitor’s defenders fortunate not to turn the ball into his own net.

It was Halstead who were to take the early lead though when Hampson played in Regan down the wing and his cross caused problems for Tower Hamlets. Firstly Pellin, the visitor’s keeper, could only parry it and Halstead next attempt was blocked but it fell kindly to Regan, who smashed it home via the far post.

Ten minutes on the clock and the lower league side ahead and whilst it was Hamlets who had most of the ball at this stage nothing decisive was being created. In fact, Hampson at the other end had a long-range effort for Halstead although Brennan needed to block when the visitor’s striker With had an effort on goal.

The pattern of the game settled into one where the visitors had the ball and Halstead were primarily working on the counter attack, that said neither side created any clear-cut chances. It looked as if Halstead would reach the half way point with their goal intact but that was not to be the case. There were two minutes of the half remaining when a long ball over the top found With who took it down well on his chest and fired passed Whymark to ensure the sides went into the break all square.

HT: Halstead Town 1-1 Tower Hamlets

The second half was very much a slow burner with both sides sparring with each other and other than Whymark needing to come off his line quickly to clear Halstead’s line there was little to talk about. It took until 65 minutes for any meaningful action as a superb Pavett freekick, from 20 yards, was brilliantly tipped over by Pellin.

The introduction of Andrade seemed to pep the hosts up a little and he managed a couple of goal bound efforts but these were dealt with, one way or another, by the visitors back line. At the other end skipper for the day warren was called on to make an important clearance from a long ball in.

The game meandered to extra time as both sides were unable to apply the killer touch.

FT: Halstead Town 1-1 Tower Hamlets

The game got a serious injection of life in the extra period and started well for Halstead as Pavett, Andrade and Hampson combined and were only denied by Furtago’s timely intervention for the visitors.

The visitors had their turn too, as their centre half Montero burst through and played in a great ball but it was fired wide by the forward. The ball was straight up the other end and a Warren free kick saw Pellin do well to clear his lines.

The midway point in the extra period was reached without addition although all the excitement was being saved for that final quarter of an hour.

It was the visitors who drew blood next as With was on hand to smash home following a corner, although the hosts were left aggrieved as they felt Whymark had been impeded. This clearly led to Halstead laying siege to the visitors goal, cheered on by a large home crowd,  although their attacks often stumbled on Pellin in the Hamlet’s goal.

Time was ticking away and it looked as if that was going to be that however, a corner in the very last minute of the game fell to Pavett. He smashed the ball into the net and sent the home supporters into raptures and the game to penalties.

In the penalty shootout fortunes went one way and then other but finally the visitors came out on top  by 6-5 and proceed to the second round of the vase.

FT (aet) Halstead Town 2-2 Tower Hamlets (Tower Hamlets won 6-5 on penalties)

Hamlets reward for that dramatic penalty shoot out win was a home tie with fellow Essex Senior League side Enfield 1893 at Mile End.  The match takes place this Saturday and promises to be a decent battle between two decent sides.  Hamlets probably start as favourites for the tie however the visitors could easily win this tie too so will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Season 2017-18 - Second Qualifying Round

Saturday 23rd September
Tower Hamlets 10 Little Oakley 1
My Buildbase FA Vase campaign continued with another trip to Mile End to see Essex Senior League side Tower Hamlets host Thurlow Nunn One side Little Oakley in a Second Qualifying Round tie.

The hosts were flying having won their last six games whilst the visitors had shocked Thurlow Nunn Premier side Haverhill Rovers in a league cup tie in midweek so both would of come into this one full of confidence and I was expecting a home win although I also thought the visitors were not to be underestimated.

Well just seconds into the contest the hosts set the tone for the afternoon by taking the lead when Curtis Pond tapped home a Hasan Mustafa cross to the back post and then in the fourth minute it was two when Pond got in down the right and fired into the far corner for an incredible opening to this game.

Oakley almost responded in the seventh minute when they saw a decent effort brilliantly tipped over by Hamlets keeper Lee McKnight and on ten minutes Pond pounced on poor visiting defending to get in but saw his poke at goal go straight at visitors keeper Luke Tylan.

But only a minute later Hamlets had a third when an appalling header back towards goal by the visitors saw Luke With in on goal and he slotted home and Hamlets lead was increased further still.

Oakley attacked in the 17th minute but after getting into a decent position were wasteful as their effort was skied over the bar, but just before half time they pulled a goal back when a poor defensive header from the hosts allowed Stephen Colley to nip in and drive home and give the visitors hope.

And moments later they almost found a second when they saw a whipped effort go just wide of the far post and Hamlets knew they needed to raise their performance again otherwise they could let their opponents back into the contest.

Well with ten minutes to go in the first half Hamlets did just that and restored their three goal cushion when With laid in Pond who strolled in and slotted into the far corner for a first half hat-trick and five minutes later Hamlets grabbed a fifth as a With header smacked against the bar, hit keeper Tylan on the back of the head, and went into the net, kind of summing up the visitors day so far.

Oakley fired over the hosts crossbar two minutes before the break but Hamlets managed to find a sixth before the break when more atrocious defending saw Pond allowed in to grab his fourth of the half and see the hosts with an emphatic 6-1 half time lead.

Oakley’s task was now to not be totally embarrassed and they had the first effort of the second period when eight minutes into it saw a Colley volley fly a foot over the hosts bar in a rather quiet period in the game.

But twenty minutes into the second half Hamlets found a seventh goal when Danny Childs saw his effort from outside the box go through the grasp of Tylan and into the far corner of the net and five minutes later it was eight as substitute James Ross pounced on a loose ball to fire home with his right foot.

It was too easy for the hosts now as they soon made it nine when Ross grabbed his second of the game, firing across keeper Tylan into the far corner, and two minutes later it was ten with Mustafa burst through on the right and struck an effort beyond Tylan into the far corner.  It was the first time I’d seen any senior side hit double figures in my 27 years of watching football!!!

And with twelve minutes left Pond should of had his fifth and Hamlets eleventh but saw his poke drift inches wide of the far post.

Oakley tried to find a second and almost found it with eight minutes left when they struck a free kick just wide and then three minutes later saw a glancing header juggled by McKnight before he managed to gather the ball.

Moments later a long range strike from the hosts saw Tylan push away, before the visitors saw an effort fly across Hamlets goal in the final minute.

Soon after the final whistle went to put Oakley out of their misery and end a ruthless afternoon from the hosts.  That’s seven wins in a row now for Hamlets and they go through to the first round proper of the competition.

And Hamlets were drawn to face another Thurlow Nunn One side in Halstead Town at Rosemary Lane in Halstead so a nice little away trip there for the Mile End side.  Halstead sit fourth in the table (as I write this) and have won five, drawn four and lost just two league games so will prove a much tougher test for the East Londeners.  Halstead have also faced two Essex Senior League sides in the County Cup this season, defeating Burnham Ramblers at home before losing a tight game at Stansted in the next round, so they certainly will be confident of victory.  But Hamlets know if they play well they will have a great chance of progressing so proves to be an intriguing contest at Rosemary Lane.

Season 2017-18 - First Qualifying Round

Friday 8th September
Tower Hamlets 2 Hackney Wick 1
So my Buildbase FA Vase journey for 2017/18 began in the shadow of docklands at the Mile End Stadium for Tower Hamlets Vs Hackney Wick in an all Essex Senior League East London derby.

Hamlets came into this one full of confidence after winning their last two games, scoring eight in the process, whilst Wick were looking to win for the first time since their opening day success at Burnham Ramblers.

And no doubt both would of fancied a decent run in the competition too, this was the visitors first entry into the competition and didn’t want to exit at the first hurdle.

The opening fifteen minutes saw little action and the first meaningful event came when Hamlets forward Frankie Sinclair and Wick full back Thomas Rebeschini came together and received lengthy treatment, and ended with the visiting full back limping off. (Sinclair carried on but was subbed at half time).

The first chance of a goal came in the 20th minute and Wick should really of gone ahead as a defensive error allowed Jeffrey Idemudia in on goal but host keeper Lee McKnight made a great save to deny him.

And just two minutes later the hosts took the lead when Curtis Pond drove forward before unleashing a terrific effort which rocketed into the top corner and give his side a one goal lead.

Hamlets quickly threatened a second goal and two minutes after going ahead saw a good double save from Manuel Gill deny the home side before Luke With glanced a header onto the top of the Wick crossbar moments later.

The next ten or so minutes saw both sides have sights of goal but as the half drew nearer to its conclusion the visitors looked more and more dangerous.

With two minutes of the half remaining the visitors saw a cutback sliced wide before Hamlets had to head an effort from visiting skipper Simpson Mpalampa off the line, but right on half time Wick did find a leveller when Ibraham Camara hit a dipping effort over keeper McKnight, and the visitors went into the half time break level.

Wick began the second half like the first and three minutes into it almost took the lead as a ball swung into the dangerzone was flicked at goal but keeper McKnight got down well to make a decent save.

Five minutes into the half Hamlets almost got in through Pond but the defender did well to get back and recover before down the other end Wick saw an effort beaten away by McKnight.

Hamlets saw a couple of decent efforts fail to result in a goal just before the hour mark, firstly when after a great crossfield ball was brilliantly controlled, the eventual effort was tipped wide by visitors keeper Gill, and secondly saw a decent corner headed wide from six yards out.

However in the 62nd minute the hosts were to get their noses in front once again when Pond grabbed his second by hitting a left footed effort beyond Gill into the bottom corner of the net.

And Pond should of completed his hat-trick moments later but saw his close range effort thump against the crossbar as the hosts missed the opportunity to put daylight between themselves and their opponents.

With fifteen minutes to go Wick saw skipper Mpalampa send a long range effort a foot wide as they searched for an equaliser in this very competitive derby.

Moments later Hamlets fired an effort over the bar which took a deflection on route, with the corner coming to nothing, and then with just over ten minutes remaining Wick forward Idemudia seemed to nudge Hamlets defender Kayode Tobun into a metal object behind the goal after the hosts player shielded the ball out for a goal kick.

This made Hamlets assistant AJ very cross and he was eventually sent to the stands although he was eventually told to leave the arena by the referee. Idemudia was booked for his part in it and Tobun was ok to continue, which was good to see.

Hamlets attacked thereafter and saw an effort snuffed out as they tried to find a clinching third goal that would finally seal the deal.

They nearly did just that deep into stoppage time but saw keeper Gill save but it proved the final act as not long afterwards the referee brought this tie to an end and it’s Hamlets who will host Thurlow Nunn One side Little Oakley in the Second Qualifying Round.

Here are some photos of the evening at Mile End:-

The winning 170 teams then take their place in the draw for the First Round Proper on Monday 25th September along with the 32 sides exempt to that round and make up the 101 ties that will take place over the weekend of 20/21/22 October.

My featured game this weekend is at The Mile End Stadium for Tower Hamlets Vs Little Oakley.  The Essex Senior League hosts are on a six match winning streak in all competitions having scored 21 goals in those six games whilst the Thurlow Nunn One visitors from North Essex have lost six of their first ten league games although did win 1-0 at Thurlow Nunn Premier Hadleigh United last time out to shock their higher league opponents.  Hamlets sure are favourites for this one however they should not take Little Oakley lightly so promises to be a intriguing tie.  I will bring you a review of this tie plus results from the rest of the round along with the draw for the First Round Proper in my next blog.
